Generation Zero Invites You To ‘Cheer Up Bob!’

Submitted by on July 25, 2011 – 8:39 am

“When you are trying to raise awareness about an issue, it’s natural to focus on the bad stuff – no-one realises how urgent your “something” is and no-one realises the enormity of the problem. Nowhere is this more true than with climate change and peak oil. For years, the message has been: we’re doomed, we need to do something now! This message is powerful because, like a cold splash of water to the face, it shocks people. The problem is that after that initial shock, many people have been shutting down. Confronted with an enormous issue (the world’s doomed), shock is soon replaced by denial or despair.

Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth, was that splash of cold water for many people. Since then, the climate change debate has moved on. As people have become aware of the issue, the next question they ask is: well, what do we do about it?

Generation Zero is a recently launched political campaign trying to give youth an optimistic answer to that question. We firmly believe that there is good reason to be optimistic, and that as youth we are uniquely placed to create a better future.

To put our optimism to the test, we’re holding a public lecture in Dunedin on Wednesday 27 July at 7pm. The lecture, called Cheer Up Bob, will feature the head of the Otago Energy Studies programme, Bob Lloyd, talking about why the world is doomed. Jeanette Fitzsimons (by video call) and two student speakers will then speak on why we have reason to hope.

We believe that solutions exist and, with a unified voice, youth can lead the way on this crucial issue. ”

Cheer Up Bob!

WHEN: Wednesday, July 27 · 7:00pm – 8:30pm

WHERE: Castle 2 Lecture Theatre, University of Otago

Proudly Supported By: Otago University Research Centre

WHO:

Bob Lloyd: Director of Energy Studies @ Otago

Jeanette Fitzsimons: Former MP

What is this?

Louis Chambers: Youth representative at Copenhagen Nego-tiations

Ashton Kelly: Head of Medical Students for Global Awareness

We’d like to cheer Bob up. We think there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about the future, and we’d like you to hear about them.

To do this, we’re giving Bob a chance to tell you why the world’s going to end. We’re then going to answer Bob with a few more optimistic visions for the future. So bring a friend and come along to listen to some inspiring speakers and find out more about the future, your future!
