August 3, 2011
Great prizes up for grabs in online Antarctic film competition – entries close August 12, 2011
Contestants have just one week left to enter the 2011 Last Ocean Online Short Film competition. The competition is being run by Christchurch-based non-profit organisation the Last Ocean Charitable Trust in conjunction with Fisheye Films.
Entrants are asked to explore the theme, “What makes the Ross Sea special?” and have access to more than 70 short clips from top New Zealand cameraman Peter Young and Natural History New Zealand. The clips are available free to download from www.lastocean.co.nz, where aspiring filmmakers will find all the details about how to enter. The competition is running in two categories, one for secondary school students and an open category for those not at school aged sixteen and over.
There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs including a cruise to the sub-Antarctic islands valued at NZ$4,000, sponsored by Heritage Expeditions. A weekend for two in Wellington, cameras, t-shirts and cash are also on offer. Competition coordinator Kate Beer says “we have been impressed by the quality of the entries so far and are looking forward to receiving many more. The competition provides a rare opportunity to work with world class documentary footage – make sure you don’t leave it until the last minute!”

The Last Ocean Charitable Trust advocates for the protection of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, identified by scientists as one of the most pristine pieces of ocean left on Earth. Once only the realm of intrepid scientists and explorers, the region is now under threat from commercial fishing activity. The Trust hopes that the short film competition will foster interest and understanding of the pressures facing the Ross Sea.
Entries are due midnight Friday August 12 2011 and will be available for viewing online by August 15. Winners will be announced during Conservation Week (September 11-18).
