Petone, NZ: LEGEND Parade added to Carnival
LEGEND Parade added to Carnival
A night parade, featuring samba drumming, masks, lanterns, costumes, and much more, is the latest addition to this year’s Petone Carnival, and everyone’s invited to be part of the experience!
Coordinated by Hutt Valley Community Arts, in conjunction with The Learning Connexion and Hutt City Council, the LEGEND Parade gives as many people who want to the chance to be part of the Carnival.
Free workshops for the public to be involved in the drumming will be provided on the four Wednesdays leading into the event beginning 17 August. These will be run by drumming legend Andreas Lepper who guarantees to provide a memorable experience for all.
“These are rhythms used in big yearly parades and drive people to the edge of musical ecstasy – we will be using bass, snare and djembe drums; cymbals, bells (and whistles), shakers (and movers) and other more obscure sound-effects,” he says.

A series of workshops will also be on offer at the Carnival, where young and old will be able to create lanterns, masks, shakers, and more and become a part of what is sure to be a fantastic ongoing event.
In honour of some of New Zealand’s heroes who will be battling on the rugby field in the weeks following the event, attendees are encouraged to dress up as their heroes
and be a part of the parade. With prizes for best dressed, whether it’s Superman or Nana, everyone can dress up and be part of our very own LEGEND Parade!
The Petone Carnival runs from 2pm – 8pm on Saturday 10 September
(postponement date 11 September), and the LEGEND Parade will kick off at 6.30pm
– right before the lighting of the Rotary Club of Hutt City Fire Sculptures.
