Guy Ryan and Inspiring Stories Trust aim to inspire young people tonight at Victory Community Centre
Media release: Inspiring Stories
The Inspiring Stories Trust, a not-for-profit organization focused on spreading change through the power of storytelling, is launching this Tuesday in Nelson a nationwide project that includes film screenings and filmmaking workshops at secondary schools. The two-month long road trip set to cover 21 cities across New Zealand will start tonight at the Victory Village Community Centre showing local films to the community.
With the theme ‘Inspiring New Zealand films made by emerging kiwi filmmakers’, the programme features highlights from last year’s competition such as ‘Bellah – Changing Oneself’, a four-minute short made by Murchison teenager Johanna Hertwich and supreme winner of the Trust’s first initiative. The Victory Village itself is the subject of ‘Why Families Matter’, a film that tells a story about the community centre. “We hope to give visibility to positive role models that empower and inspire young people,” says Guy Ryan, CEO of Inspiring Stories Trust and award-winning filmmaker.
The Victory Village Community Centre is also hosting the workshops offered by the Trust the following day, March 11. Designed for secondary students, the one-day intensive programme covers all aspects of filmmaking, from developing stories to camera skills. Interested Students can sign up at www.inspiringstories.org.nz/
Another way to participate is through the film competition run by the Trust until July 31. This year’s theme is ‘Young Kiwis making a difference’ and aims to support filmmakers to create compelling films about New Zealanders engaged in projects that benefit their local communities.
