Youth Cycle the Length of the Country to Climate Summit
In two weeks’ time, 1000 young people will gather in Auckland for New Zealand and the Pacific’s first youth climate summit.
Five attendees began their 1300 kilometre unsupported cycle ride to Power Shift from Dunedin to Auckland last Friday. The group is connecting with five additional students from the Wellington region and will grow in size as more cyclists from the North Island join them en route to Auckland.Supporters and summit attendees are gathering in Wellington, Thursday 22nd, 8am, outside Te Papa to send the ambitious cyclists off in style for the final half of their journey.
Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will be present present and an orange bike mob will accompany the students along the waterfront, some joining them all the way up the Kapiti coast.Lindsey Horne, a student of Otago University, said that their chosen method of transport was fueled by a desire to reduce individual carbon emissions in a fun and visible way. “Cycling is an action that we can take today to address what is essentially the defining issue of our generation. Having cycled for 10 days already through New Zealand’s beautiful landscape we can see how much there is to lose if climate change isn’t addressed.”The team have attracted media attention in the towns they have passed through and are checking in with their supporters via their Facebook page. They are plowing their way through 8 kg of peanut butter and plan to arrive in Auckland in 13 days time.
Power Shift is a youth volunteer driven initiative modelled on similar events in Australia, Canada and the United States. The weekend of workshops, high profile speakers and the launch of 350 Aotearoa and Generation Zero’s 2013 Campaign will take place at Auckland University of Technology on the 7-9th of December.
