Artist Tess Sheerin’s latest street art project in Christchurch
By Tess Sheerin
I returned to Christchurch last year after four years in the UK. After the disaster of the earthquakes, I just needed to come home. I love New Zealand, it’s where my family is and it’s where I want to be.
It was the devastation of what remained of the city that inspired my initial drawings. I was pretty sad when I came home to see my home town in such a state, nothing was as I remembered it. I just started drawing these crazy animals to cheer myself up. ‘The Hope Bear’ mural is based on an original charcoal drawing with the aim to help brighten up the city and inspire other people in Christchurch to make their mark. We need to work together as a community to rebuild Christchurch and as an artist this is the way I can help. I hope the mural gives a positive impression of street art in New Zealand and it is just the first taste of my massive mural mission that is in on the cards for the next year. Keep up with my works at http://tesssheerin.com/
