Five minutes with Amelia Smith of DoGoodJobs on ‘What’s good for you right now?’
What feels good to me is helping people find purposeful, meaningful work. Once upon a time I was an uninspired hospitality worker who was disillusioned with a job market full of roles where the objective was to make someone rich. I longed for an opportunity to make a comfortable living doing something of value for society. Then along came fledgling ethical jobs board Do Good Jobs and I realised there were masses of people who felt the same way – oh how important it is to connect with like-minded people! Through renewed enthusiasm and support I have ended up with a full-time job I love in the energy sector, and a part-time job cultivating NZ’s number one ethical jobs board.
It feels great to be acknowledging that people want to work for a higher cause. I love helping to make this good work more visible and supporting and nurturing the job market so there is more of this type of work around. The best part is when I hear that others are getting value out of it too. Employers are getting amazing new employees and job seekers are refreshed by inspiring opportunities.
