A team of Orewa College students, called The Future, has won first place and $3000 in the Auckland Unitary Plan youth video competition, after notching up 5,643 views for their film on how Auckland should grow.
Winning filmmakers Stefan Crabbe (14 years), Aimee Mills (14 years), Jasmine Bishop (13 years) and Yasmin Pena (14 years) had their film posted on council’s YouTube page along with four other finalists. They took the title after receiving the most views on their film at the close of the 11-week engagement period on the draft Unitary Plan.
Filmmaker Stefan Crabbe said the team is really proud they not only won the competition, but also played a part in getting young people involved in a council plan that they might otherwise not have heard about.
“It feels cool to show our work; it’s such a big buzz knowing that thousands of people have seen our video. The competition has definitely got more teenagers thinking about the future of Auckland. It was a cool way to get younger people involved in the Unitary Plan,” said Stefan.
In their film, The Future talks about what is important to them: “The thing that brings people to New Zealand and Auckland is the environment. It’s the beaches, nature and untouched scenery that draws people in. This is an aspect we must keep in the next 30 years.”
Councillor Michael Goudie, who oversees the Youth Advisory Panel and has been encouraging younger Aucklanders to have their say on the draft Unitary Plan, said: “All five finalists created videos that were of a really high standard. I was blown away by their inspiring and positive visions for Auckland’s future.
“A super big congratulations to the winning team from Orewa – The Future! They should be really proud of what they created and getting over 5,600 likes on their video – an awesome effort team!”
The winning filmmakers ended their video with the words: “We want to be the ones to write our own future.”
The competition ended at 5pm on 31 May 2013. The places for the five finalists were determined by the number of views their videos received.
