Think deep: World Oceans Day 8 June

That moment when your toes touch the waves and the ocean greets your feet; you are connected to all of life.  A lot of the time, my view of the ocean is a walk along the beach, admiring the sun sparkling on the surface… I don’t often stop to think much deeper than that.  And, I need to.  That is what World Ocean Day on Saturday 8 June hopes for… for us to take a moment out to think about our connection to the ocean.

Initially coming out of the 1993 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro; World Ocean Day has officially been celebrated since 2002 around the globe, promoting the importance of honouring, celebrating and valuing the crucial role of the ocean and asking humans to stop and think.

Why celebrate World Oceans Day?… from the WOD website, they suggest some good reasons!:

“The world’s ocean:

  • Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
  • Helps feed us
  • Regulates our climate
  • Cleans the water we drink
  • Offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines
  • Provides limitless inspiration!”

Amazingly, two thirds of the planet is actually ocean; and I’ve read that perhaps planet ‘earth’ should be renamed planet ‘ocean’.

Without the ocean there would be no life on Earth.  World Oceans Day encourages people to think about this deep connection humans have with the water world, and how they can help conserve it, discover its beauty, learn how the way we live affects it, and think about how we can change the way we take care of it through our everyday actions.
