The Nelson Mail reports that Yurts are “the new housing”. A Motueka business trio have been working with local council to ensure the low impact, affordable homes comply with local council policies. The business Custom Canvas has just won an Outdoor Fabric Producers of NZ (OFPANZ)award for a Hastings yurt that met local council compliance standards. The article said yurts were becoming “mainstream” housing option.

Great to see this and congratulations to the Nelson Council. I tried to do something similar with my Happy, simply. – a lifestyle model and education project with the Kapiti Coast District Council.
The Council was initially very keen to celebrate the model of connectedness, simplicity, sustainability and self-sufficiency but as the idea became a reality the barriers started coming until in the end I had to do it without their input or outreach…
Councils are very reluctant to make examples of things that don’t fit in the book so again I applaud all involved and the Nelson Council. I would love any tips on how to better engage KCDC to make sustainability as mainstream as coffee (Fairtrade of course) and catch ups!
