Mighty coastal totara forest rises back up
by Charlotte Squire
Originally reported in the Nelson Mail.
A rare coastal totara forest is being regenerated on a sandspit in Golden Bay by caring hands.
These mighty, native trees can only be grown in certain parts of the coast because they rise so high, they can block the million dollar views that make coastal property so valuable. This spot’s perfect because it’s out on a sandspit, with an estuary behind it.
Supported by local council, the Department of Conservation and local schools, Healthpost post have been steadily planting 700 – 1000 trees each year for the past four years, starting with habitat plants.
I feel so heartened by this, given that early settlers nearly wiped the totara trees out over the last 100 years. These trees could still be around in 1000 years, thanks to locals making a positive difference.
Healthpost, the online health product store, seriously walk their environmental talk.
