111 trees planted for each girl born
Kristina Jensen
In a small village in India, residents have turned the cultural tide of rejecting girl babies in favour of boys. For each girl born, 111 trees are planted and villagers also contribute to a fund that is held in an account for her until she reaches a certain age.
To date, villagers in Pilplantri have planted over a quarter of a million trees.
Imagine if we introduced a policy worldwide that for every child born, a tree is planted. The problem of deforestation would be halted overnight when you consider that every day, around 370,000 children are born. That adds up to approximately 130 million trees every year!
Why stop there? How about planting a tree every year of your child’s life?
“What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants the friend of sun and sky;
He plants the flag of breezes free;
The shaft of beauty, towering high, he plants a home to heaven anigh.
For song and mother-croon of bird, in hushed and happy twilight heard –
The treble of heaven’s harmony.
These things he plants who plants a tree.”
— Henry Cuyler Bunner, the Heart of the Tree

Ooooooh I love this so so much! What a gorgeous tradition! What if we could plant a tree a month for each person to take a moment to appreciate their life?
And we would get to see the gorgeous forests that spring up as a result! I am so up for this I will have some babies, so that I can plant some trees for them…
