Giraffe looks to future with determination in Christchurch
‘Giraffing Around’ by Tess Sheerin
– City Garage, 10 Liverpool Street, Christchurch (beside Les Mills Gym).
This mural is called ‘Giraffing Around’, she basically represents protection and is looking forwards to the future with determination. The smaller giraffes that are climbing up the neck show this perseverance. I made her this big, like Christchurch at the moment; a big city in a vulnerable state. She is floating around and unsure what is happening but look at her I think she is happy and the bubbles that are coming out of her stand for ideas.
I believe at the moment Christchurch really needs some colour, the city is so grey and there are so many blank wall canvasses. We have the potential to evolve into a unique, vibrant and creative city and feel that the unusual projects that have spurred from such devastation are important for Christchurch to grow from, not just as temporary spaces but as part of the new city. I hope by doing this piece I can help the community to re-connect with the central city again making a new environment that is unique to Christchurch’s identity.
I would like to thank all the amazing people that helped make this possible: Christchurch City Council, Owners of 10 Liverpool Street City Garage, Richard Sewell (Gap Filler), Brie Sherow (Life in Vacant Spaces), Kimberley Guy (Sydhem Paint Supplies), Alison Chapman (Cotec), Ross French (Concrete Cloud UK), David Bainbridge, Les Mills Crew, Blair Kaad, Jenny Owens, Ian Sheerin, Wil Breukelaar, Madeline Sheerin, Stefan Roberts and Reuben Woods.
