Study confirms turmeric a natural anti-depressant

Submitted by on September 2, 2013 – 4:41 pm

Kristina tumericA recent study further confirms the effectiveness of turmeric (curcumin) as an anti-depressive. The researchers even go as far to say that it may be more effective than some of the common drugs currently being prescribed for depression.

The wonderful thing about turmeric, which is already known for its value in treating inflammatory conditions and diabetes, is that unlike Prozac, there are no frightening side effects like “suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders”.

So get out the veggies and some bright sunshine turmeric and cook up a dish to banish the blues!

Here’s my favourite deliciously colourful way to eat rice – with turmeric of course.

This dish is known as Yellow Butter Rice in our family.

Recipe below serves 4.

  1. Into a pot, measure 1 cup of white rice (basmati or jasmine) and 2 cups of water.

  2. Add a generous knob of butter, 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of turmeric and 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds.

  3. Bring to the boil then turn down to low and simmer for 5 minutes.

  4. Take the pot off the heat and wrap it in a clean towel.

  5. Bury the pot under a duvet or wrap it in a blanket for 15-20 minutes.

  6. Your rice will cook slowly and evenly and be superbly fluffy.

Excellent served with a curry and fresh salad greens.
