First New Zealand musicians selected to perform at the World Music Expo in over a decade

Taonga Puoro master, Horomona Horo and his group, Waiora are to be the first New Zealand group to perform at the World Music Expo (WOMEX) since 2002.

Horo’s is one of 36 performances selected from over 800 applications from around the world

The expo is to be held in Cardiff from the 23rd until the 27th of October

WAIORA is a unique group in that taonga puoro are used as the main instruments

Horomona will be recording his first album as the lead musician in October in the lead up to WOMEX. He has previously recorded with Maisey Rika, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Moana and the Tribe, and many other NZ artists

Horomona Horo will also perform three shows with WAIORA guitarist, Joshua Rogers at the SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX from 20 – 22 September

In May/June this year, WAIORA played concerts in Slovakia(Konvergencie Festival), Ireland and the UK, including lectures at the University of London and recording with UK film composer, Paul Lewis.

Horomona was the winner of the inaugural concerto competition in 2001 and has performed extensively internationally since 2005.

Horomona was mentored by the late, Dr Hirini Melbourne from 2001 and by Dr Richard Nunns since 2006.

The trip to Cardiff and the UK will also include a performance at the SPREE Festival in Scotland, seminars at the compositional institute at Brunel University, an assessment of the taonga puoro collection at the Horniman Museum and additional London performances, including with UK composer, Peter Weigold at Club Inegales.

Horomona is currently working with composer Ross Harris, the New Zealand String Quartet and Voices NZ Choir on a new work for the 2015 International Festival
