Transform A Samoan Village With Biogas!

Pledging to make a positive impact on the lives of the people of Piu Village in Samoa, Murray Ward, Bill Rucks and Sean Weaver are planning on transforming the village with Biogas!  They are planning to supply six households with full biodigester systems along with clean, new biogas cooktops and biogas lights.  But, what does this actually mean?!  Well, it will unlock the free, green energy all around them.

Why will this make a difference?  “For Piu Village the days of cooking daily meals over dirty open fires will be over – no more collecting firewood, no more smoke in the eyes and lungs. For the mothers of Piu Village this will give them more time with their children, with quick, clean cooking facilities right in their homes. Adjustable gas stoves will allow for more options for meals. No longer will households have to go without evening lighting due to the fear of an unaffordable power bill – the biogas lights will provide free illumination. And they can get rid of some of that invasive Merremia vine that has covered croplands and trees!

While Piu is just a small village, by showcasing these energy solutions there, this opens the door to larger programmes getting going in Samoa and other Pacific Islands with the support of international development assistance donors and philanthropic foundations.”

This is a home or community biogas project that should really be a great success. I am surprised that there are no other comments here, adding support. Most biogas plant owners have to look for the food source for the digester, but the Merremia vine should provide an almost unlimited source of feedstock, so there should be plenty of biogas produced.

  • I love the whole idea of this project. Biogas is produced from the anaerobic digestion process.

It will help the parents so much, and those children will have better lives, but I do question whether the biogas lighting is really free.

Will there really be so much biogas that there will be enough left over for the lighting at night? I hope that there will be.
