This week Happyzine’s celebrating summer road trips.  What better way to explore the world both on-road and off than by horse?  We think horses, and horse and carts are the way of the future. Those with a handy horse can head to the hills of Murchison this March for their annual fundraiser.

The opportunity to ride in the mountains and valleys of the Murchison area is on again, with planning underway for the fifth annual Fundraising Trek on March 13th to 16th 2014.

This year’s ride will be based in the stunning Maruia Valley near Springs Junction. The trek raises funds for Murchison Pony Club and is organised by adult members of the club.

“Each year the Trek has taken in a new and exciting area of our backyard,” says Trail Boss Bron McKenzie, “and this year will be significant in that we have achieved the five year mark.”

She said the Trek started out as a bit of gamble, but with the incredible support of local landowners and the participants, it has become a successful annual event.

“We have got it pretty sorted now, with our fantastic caterers the Murchison Golden Oldies back again, and a formula that works for us and the participants. We aim to offer a relaxing couple of days for pleasure

riders. We are all busy people ourselves, so we leave the big days and high adventure for other trekking groups.”

“It has become a very social event, with over 50% of riders returning, and a chance to meet new people, make new friends and tell some yarns. Even a bit of horse dealing goes on!”

The Trek is limited to 45 riders. Anyone wanting more information can email [email protected] Registrations come out mid-January and spaces are limited.
