People with attitude sought for spotlight

Do you know someone who is leaving his or her mark on the world while challenging the perception of disability?

Now is your chance to shine a light on those achievements by nominating him or her for a 2014 Attitude Award.

The national Attitude Awards event, now in its seventh year, is an annual black tie gala that celebrates the accomplishments of Kiwis living with disabilities. Entrants range from supreme athletes to less known individuals – anyone whose family, friends or colleagues think they should be recognised for courage, determination, or for providing support for people with disabilities.

Attitude Awards Trustee Dan Buckingham, a member of the elite Wheel Black team, says the awards is not just about handing out medals and prizes, it’s about changing the way people view what is achievable with a disability.

“We are proud to once again open up nominations for our event that showcases the lives and potential of people with disabilities,” he says. “A huge amount of gratitude goes out to our sponsors and supporters who continue to commit to making the Attitude Awards a night to remember.

“It’s always a great time of year as the nominations start rolling in. Make sure the people you believe deserve recognition are in the mix. For now it’s over to you, the public.”

Robyn Hunt, winner of the Attitude ACC Supreme Award in 2013, says she was humbled to be recognised by the people in her community. “I like that the awards highlight people who’ve helped improve the lives of others,” says Robyn. “It’s important that people with disabilities work together to make change, and the awards is a great example of this.”

There are eight categories in the Attitude Awards: Sport Performer of the Year, Courage in Sport, Artistic Achievement, Youth, Spirit of Attitude, ACC Employer Award and the Making a Difference Award. The Attitude ACC Supreme Award is selected from the category winners.

This year a new category has been introduced: the Attitude Junior Award. This is for someone under 15-years-old with a disability who has challenged themselves in a significant way.

Chief Executive of ACC, Scott Pickering, says ACC is proud to be principal sponsor of the awards for the seventh year, including sponsorship of the Attitude ACC Employer Award and the Attitude ACC Supreme Award.

“I’m really looking forward to this year’s Attitude Awards, which are a significant event on New Zealand’s calendar. Through celebrating excellence in the disability community, and the important contributions made by New Zealanders with disabilities, the awards have the power to shift perceptions and to enhance lives.”

ACC along with Invacare, Barfoot and Thompson, Westpac, Drake Medox, Ministry of Health, Air New Zealand, Wayne Francis Charitable Trust and the IHC Foundation are among the sponsors supporting the event.

The awards, which are inspired by the positive stories shown weekly on TV One’s Attitude programme (8:30am Sundays), will be celebrated at a black-tie event in Auckland on December 3.

Nomination can be submitted online at www.attitudeawards.org. Nominations close at 5pm on Thursday July 10. Note: nominations for Sport Performer remain open until October 15.
