You are the solution, honey bunny.
Charlotte Squire argues that for every problem there is a solution, and asks for crowd support to relaunch her solutions focused news website Happyzine in the new year.
As a journo for a large daily newspaper, I just finished writing an article about award winning cheese makers who insist on making products from happy, sustainably managed cows because this leads to better tasting, higher quality milk. Last week I wrote an article about the owner of a large, iconic cafe who puts all his food scraps through a worm farm, then grows veggies for his cafe from the by-product. Last month I wrote an article about a herbalist who has created a natural skin care range using all natural, locally grown Maori medicinal herbs. That same month I wrote about a new 2015 calender designed to inspire people daily, and a local horse trainer on a mission to save and train up the world’s most wild horses, gently, without force.
Why am I telling you this?
Because each article offers solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems – carbon emissions, food waste, food miles, unwanted animals. After nearly twenty years of writing, particularly about environmental sustainability, I can safely say: for every problem, there is a solution, in fact, there’s probably more than one.
And this thrills me. It fills me with hope for our future. And it inspires me to keep hunting down new stories, and meeting new people, who are engaging in intelligent, peaceful, creative projects that provide the answers to our most pressing questions.
Many of us are deeply aware of today’s problems. Some of us find the burden of knowledge, especially during these times of mega communication channels, over whelming. Others are out there trying to make a difference, and many are just trying to keep up with life, normal life, and that’s hard enough.
But what if more and more of us were aware of the small and not so small actions that people are taking now to righten the balance in our economy, our environment, within our communities. What if increasing amounts of us knew how to tackle the problems thanks to being educated and informed by intelligent, balanced media? And what if we were increasingly fueled up with the one thing we all benefit from: hope.
I would like to offer this service to you by sharing my own stories and the stories of some very talented writers, daily, on happyzine.co.nz – a solutions focused news site that I would like to relaunch in January 2015.
My challenge is – I need the crowd support to show a mandate to the sustainable businesses who are poised to financially support this media service I would like to offer. They need to see at least 50,000 like this idea. The solution is – you.
