The instigator of a week long public fast in Blenheim, says the solutions to climate change are to listen and take action.
Long time resident Bill McEwan and his son Melbourne-based film and television assistant director Robbie McEwan staged a sit in fast in a Blenheim CBD band rotunda for one week. Their mission: to inspire conversation and action about climate change.
They finished their fast on Sunday, 17th May.
Bill said it was important to “whakarongo, listen.”
He said first, listen to the “heart beat of the earth.” He also urged people to get online and research the climate change issue.
“See if you can keep to good science from independent sources and not be deflected into the debate pushed by vested interests who discredit global warming.”
He suggested people read Storms of my Grandchildren by James Hansen, Climate Wars” by Gwynne Dyer, and This Changes Everything” Naomi Klein.
He also suggested people listen to themselves, saying “get clear about what you can do. It’s different for everyone.”
He said action could include from “everything from political action to getting more renewable energy in your community, to lowering emissions at work and home. Nothing is too small.”
“Don’t wait until you have your own house in order. All of us are tied up in this carbon based world and none of us can act purely. Don’t let that stop you.”
