Returning to the compass within – by Charlotte Squire
Recently I gave a talk to a circle of beautiful women about positive parenting. Something I had learned from some really tough years when I was solo parenting a young child struck a chord with them, so I thought I’d share it with you.
Once upon a time someone, I can’t remember who, told me to find where I connected with God, in my body. I learned that different people find their sources of power in different places. Mine I found in my gut, just behind my belly button, or in what my old Sensei at Karate would call her ‘hara’.
My hara is the place I need to send my mind when I need to find my centre.
When I’m angry, I go there. When I’m afraid I go there. When I’m confused I go there. Discovering this physical place in my body I can return to again and again is the reason I’m happily married to the father of my children today. It’s a core reason my life is healthy and happy.
Side note: my man and I are both strong, passionate people so we needed to learn to co-exist peacefully. This inner compass trick helps me find my calm, straighten my posture, and speak my truth to him. As soon as I go there he respects me, because I’m respecting myself. I’m speaking from my power.
This has been a fantastic, life changing lesson for me to learn.
Hilariously as I’m writing this the song ‘A hard lesson to learn’ is playing on the radio, and it was!
There’s nothing I can’t do from this place, if my heart allows it.
And of course the same applies to you. You can use this tool in any relationship.
Do you have a similar habit? Have you tried this? I’d love to hear your thoughts,
