Scottish scientists delighted to discover earthworms the size of snakes
Stuff report that enormous earthworms, some as big as 41cm long, have been discovered at the Isle of Rum, off Scotland. Scientists say undisturbed, rich soil and predator free conditions have allowed the earthworms to expand to triple their usual size.
Lead researcher on the earthworm study Dr Kevin Butt, from University of Central Lancashire, said the worms weigh around 12.5 grams, while the normal size of an earthworm is around four to five grams. Kevin said they were like “small snakes” and that the giant worms were a delight to discover as they were a “crucial” part of the ecosystem and helped to reduce flooding. Read more.
