365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#147 – Exploring the New: Hot Stone Massage (my style of adventure).

Submitted by on September 14, 2010 – 5:37 pm

Hot stone massage.  Have you ever had one?  I hadn’t, until today.  I’ve just emerged from the health clinic across the road (highly convenient) where I received the hot stone treatment of my life from Tania Marsden.  Sigh.  The heat.  On your muscles.  Is bliss.  I left Tania’s clinic feeling like melted butter.  I put my umbrella up, even though it had stopped raining and the sun was shining.  I floated across the road.  I vaguely remember saying hi to my dog.  And now here we are, talking about it.

Yes, floaty I am, but things didn’t begin that way.   I turned up at Tania’s and immediately felt nervous.  Sure, a hot stone massage sounded lush, and appeared lush, on paper.  But when I finally appeared and found myself sitting and chatting with Tania as we prepared to begin, the nervous laughter began.  I mean, come on!  We’re talking hot stones here, on my bare skin!

Bless her, Tania took the time to talk me through absolutely everything she was going to do to me.  And she even went so far as to say “if you feel uncomfortable about this treatment at any point, just let me know and I’ll switch to normal massage”.  I was deeply impressed.  And told her so.  In fact I told her a lot of stuff through our session.  She told me I was one of the chattiest people she’d worked on (sigh, I’ve always been a talker, and when I have the rapt attention of people I really like, well let’s just say the flood gates open).  She explained how she would apply the stones (fast to start with, moving them up and down my arms as my body adjusted to the heat), and how she would introduce them to my back.  She told she’d assume all was well unless I let her know.  I told her I was down with this.

From the moment my head hit that little face-holding bit at the end of the massage table my entire being began to relax.  I sighed, thinking to myself ‘even just lying here is enough’ and then told Tania this was the sort of treatment every mother needed.  Tania explained that she was going to use almond oil and sunflower oil on me (and was that ok?).  And when I exclaimed happily that I could hardly feel the stone, she kindly explained that she was not yet using the stone, no this was still hot oil.

And when the first, small, hot, volcanic stones were slid down my arms, I sighed.  They felt great.  She moved them across my skin just fast enough for the heat to permeate my pores, and I sank deeper and deeper into a state of bliss (whilst continuing to chat randomly about anything that came to mind).

Next she sat a big mama hot stone on my lower back, on a nice thick towel, and left it there there in this pulsing little parcel of heat to permeate my torso.  It sat there, very kindly sending heat to all the parts of me that needed some love and attention.  And the stones kept coming.  From tiny stones, to larger and larger ones.  After each one was used to massage my back or legs.  It was placed all neat and tidy along both sides of my spine, on my muscles.  Can you imagine?  Ahhh.  Every human deserves to experience this at least once.

Soon my legs were tended to.  Which was great as I like to run (well, jog) and my muscles responded gratefully to all that heat and loving touch.  Next  my feet were rubbed and given a hot stone each.  Then finally my neck, head and my face were lovingly massaged.  Those last strokes of my forehead were what it took to finally take the Charlotte talk-system down.  Yes, finally, the great-one finally silenced me.  I didn’t even have the energy to say “you’ve finally silenced me”.  That’s how good it was.

And now here I sit, attempting to tell you just how beautiful hot stone massage is.  Tania’s a true professional.  And I’m a true professional receiver.  It was meant to be.
