365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#194 – New York is Becoming a ‘Greater, Greener City’ … Just Think What We Could Do!

Submitted by on November 2, 2010 – 6:49 pm

I found this amazing You Tube video (see below) last night about how New York is seeking to become the ‘greatest, greenest city in the world’ and I’m still buzzing.  They’re running the ‘PlanYC Initiative’.  They’re seeking to unclog the streets so that commerce doesn’t get stifled (what ever that means, hey I live in Takaka) and clean the air and the water.  They say a car just doesn’t make a lot of sense in New York city.  They now have over 450 miles of dedicated bike lanes, they’re putting in more bike parks and encouraging safe and secure bike parking.  They’re seeking to make New York a family friendly biking environment.

I find this type of video so damn exciting!  I want to see the people in power in my country stand up and announce that New Zealand is now going to honestly live up to it’s clean green reputation.  I want to see Aotearoa embrace green technology, and move in the direction of a green economy, where people can earn their livelihoods by working at environmentally savvy jobs.  It makes total sense really doesn’t it? I’d like to see words such as ‘green’ and ‘sustainability’ become cool around Parliament once more.  Here’s the DVD, it show’s what’s possible:

If New York can do this, think what we can achieve here in New Zealand.  We have the potential to take this place to dizzying environmental heights and lead world-wide right now, it’s only a matter of making it our focus.
