‘Community Blackboard’ where people share their thoughts on community issues and sustainability

Media Release: 14 August, 2013

The region’s hottest annual showcase for practical tips on living well, the Ecofest Expo, returns this weekend to Nelson.

Sponsored by Nelson City and Tasman District Councils, this year’s two-day Ecofest Expo (August 17 and 18) focuses on getting ‘back to basics’.

“This year it’s all about practical, basic, do-it-yourself advice on how people can save money, stretch their dollar further and live better for less – all the while being kind to our planet,” says Ecofest spokesperson, Councillor Gail Collingwood.

Over 100 stallholders will be at the Trafalgar Centre to provide hands-on learning opportunities and practical ‘how-to’ education. Seminars and workshops will include how to heat your home efficiently and cost-effectively, advice on building eco-homes; designing productive gardens; saving money on car running costs; and healthy school lunches – to mention just a few. Food demonstrations will include how to make fruit wines and the ABCs of smoking food.

Other highlights include the Funky Fashion recycled show, the famous clothes ‘shwap’, and the alternative-powered toy car competition.  “I’m personally hoping to catch the Funky Fashion Show because I’m a huge fan of the fantastic recycled garments students create each year,” says Cr Collingwood.

“Ecofest is hugely popular in the region. We get around 5000 to 6000 visitors each year. I think people are hungry for practical advice on how to live more sustainably and improve our general health and wellbeing. Ecofest is a great forum to share and learn.

Returning judge Tasman District Councillor Judene Edgar says: “The show is not just about entertainment and information. It’s also about presentation, especially for the exhibitors and contest entrants.

“The standard was great last year and this year. I am looking forward to more of the same with new and innovative ways we can live in and with our environment economically and sustainably,” says Cr Edgar.

The Expo will be held at the Trafalgar Centre this Saturday and Sunday, 17 & 18 August.  Tickets are $5 for adults, kids are free and you can purchase them at the door.  Doors open from 10am and the show runs till 5pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.
