Summer Special: Wake Up With a Smoothie – The Tame Smoothie

Submitted by on January 13, 2010 – 6:00 am One Comment

Welcome to day one of ‘Wake Up With a Smoothie’.  Let’s take things gently.  This morning, we’re going for the classic, super-simple smoothie.  I’ve named it ‘The Tame Smoothie’ … actually, now that I think about it, this name is very apt in that our first recipe isn’t technically a smoothie, it’s more a ‘juice’, but I digress:

Ingredients (serves two)

2 Cups of chilled natural fruit juice (in my case I’m using Apple and Lemon juice – because it’s my current favourite)

2 Teaspoons of spirulina powder

Ice

What to do:

Mix the spirulina powder in two glasses, each with a couple of inches of juice, until it’s smooth, and well mixed – lump free – then add the rest of the juice, mix it all, and then add the ice. Voila! The finished product shall furnish your body-temple with all manner of goodies (protein, vitamins C, D, and E, heaps of B vitamins, potassium and zinc to name a few). Spirulina may taste a little strange to some who are experiencing it for the first time, I mean, lets face it – it’s an algae.  In fact, I just discovered that the Aztecs once called it ‘Tecuitlatl, meaning stone’s excrement’, they used it to boost their energy levels too.  Regardless of what the Aztecs called it, the stuff’s packed with protein and is mega good for you. In fact, the first time I tried it, I knew I was onto something good because I experienced a sort of high – as in a huge leap in energy – so why not give it a go?
