Calls For Entries For the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays 2010

Submitted by on January 30, 2010 – 8:45 am

Auckland - Round the BaysStart the new decade on a “runner’s high” – registration for New Zealand’s largest mass-participation sporting event is now open!

It’s time to pull the running shoes out from the back of the closet and start training for the 38th iconic Auckland run, the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays.

Taking place on Sunday March 14, the event attracts more than 40,000 registered entrants of all ages and abilities each year.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be divided between several charities that benefit children including Ronald McDonald House, Waitemata Harbour Clean-Up Trust and Fairfax First Books.

Event spokesperson, Fairfax Media Group Sales and Marketing Manager Sandra King encourages entrants to register for the event via the official website, www.roundthebays.co.nz.

“By registering as an official entrant, you are helping some well deserving charities and increasing your fitness at the same time,” says Ms King.

“From February 1, the website provides a six week training programme for runners or walkers, so there’s plenty of time to build your fitness in the lead up to the race. It’s a great way to kick off the new decade.”

2010 marks the first year that the event has been sponsored by Ports of Auckland.

Ports of Auckland Managing Director Jens Madsen says the company is very proud to have the opportunity to support and sponsor the iconic Auckland event.

“Round the Bays is a natural fit for us,” says Mr Madsen.  “The run, which showcases Auckland’s waterfront and active lifestyle, starts right on our doorstep.

“We’re also delighted to have nominated the Waitemata Harbour Clean-Up Trust as one of the charities to benefit from proceeds raised from event entry fees.  The Trust does great work cleaning up the harbour, working closely with volunteers and school groups,” says Mr Madsen.

Spanning 8.4km around the city’s picturesque waterfront boulevards, Quay Street and Tamaki Drive, the event is an achievable distance for runners and walkers – the able-bodied and the physically challenged.

Ports of Auckland Round the Bays starts at 9.30am on Sunday 14 March.

Entry fee is $10 for children (16 and under) and $15 for adults.
