Brisbane youth dance to the silent disco craze sweeping Europe
March 23 2010

Brisbane’s young people will get a surreal taste of the silent disco craze when Brisbane City Council stages its first ever Silent DJ Party on Friday April 9 in King George Square to kick off National Youth Week.

Participants will be free to dance out of sync and sing out of tune using two channelled digital wireless headphones to tune into the beats of two prominent Brisbane disc jockeys, DJ Bacon and DJ Danny Cool.

The two DJs will play a mix of contemporary pop rock, R&B together with old school hip hop and funk and soul.

In the last five years, silent discos have become fixtures of major music festivals and events such as Glastonbury in the UK and premiered in Australia at Big Day Out festivals in 2006.

The concept of the silent disco was reportedly developed by two Dutch DJs back in 2002 to tackle impending noise restrictions and provide a viable option for “after parties”.

DJ Danny Cool brings his own experience of having played a silent disco on a city rooftop in Auckland two years ago and says it is a really new and unusual experience.

“As a DJ, it was a really fun experience to see a couple of hundred people dancing to music that was being played only via headphones,” DJ Danny Cool said.

“It was a city rooftop party that was well underway when I arrived and it was a pretty funny sight to see all these people dancing with no audible music playing,” he said.

“There were two separate music sources so the different dancing styles were hilarious because hip-hop might have been on one channel then faster dance music beaming on the other.

“I think people have a lot more fun than just going to a nightclub and anyone aged 15-30 in Brisbane on April 9 should come on down and give it a go.”

While this will be his first time playing a silent disco, DJ Bacon is arguably Brisbane’s most prominent hip hop DJ renowned for his unique scratch style and funky approach on the decks.

The former Queensland DMC champion is one of the few Australian DJ’s to produce, manufacture and distribute his own 12″ vinyl release around the world.

Silent DJ Party will also feature a free-play games parlour complete with pinball machines, stand-up arcade games such as Tekkin or sit-down games stations for playing old favourites such as PacMan, Donkey Kong or Space Invadors.
