365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#86 – Peace on the Beach
Favourite moment of the day? Time-pocket that filled me up until I was sloshing over with contentment? Once again – that title goes to the time I spent at the beach today, with my half-naked son, and two dogs.
Picnic gear had been tossed into place on the sand, and food distributed. I sank into a stretch (feigning some vague notion of excercise) and watched the three of them playing. Rachel – my neighbour’s huge one year old Ridgeback cross, had just discovered the joys of sinking sand. She lolloped round around in circles, shaking her head at the sheer excitement and wonder of it all, occasionally rearing up to dive dramatically and head-first into the sand. After a mini-rest, she’d leap back into action to prance around in a circle like a pony again, shaking her head in utter amazement at her discovery.
Meanwhile, my son, clad in three layers on top and nothing but skin down below, was equally enthralled with the thousands of discarded shells he was trying to reach through the salt water pool. Oblivious to his clothed arm, he was stretching as deep as he could, through the sparkling, sun-lit water, to pull out hand-fuls of dripping sand and shells. Then he’d hold his hand high and watch all the sand and water drip slowly between his fingers. Some of the mix would splat, unnoticed on his jersey and face.
And finally, there was my dog Maia. She was on general stick finding duty. She trotted around, keeping an eye on us all, finding and discarding the not-quite-up-to-scratch sticks, as well as the morsels of dead and stinky things. She was content to cruise. She’s like that Maia. It doesn’t matter where she is, she’ll find the fun, and the people to adore her. She somehow manages to combine reasonably good behavior with a relaxed and joyful approach to life. She’s my inspiration.
Each of them were relaxing, as was I, in the mid afternoon sunshine. The beach was still, warm, and stretched for miles at dead-low tide. I felt content to be there, of all the places in the world that I could be. And for one long moment, the beach held me safe and peaceful, on its lap.
Nothing lasts for ever. Soon after Maia headed for the river-channel, followed by Rachel and finally my son, who called his Mama. Soon we were bounding toward the next moment.
Ok, time for my promised e-book progress report of the day: today I emailed all the people I could think of who had featured in Happyzine for their inspiring and green initiatives and sent them my list of questions. So it’s all – gather, gather the data right now. The following week shall be write, write, write!
