365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#190 – Persistence, Self Belief and Open-Mindedness Will Get You Everywhere
Have you ever had one of those moments where you just wanted to give up because it seemed totally impossible? One of my writers has just come through that process, and has decided to stick with it …
I just posted up an article called ‘Critical Mass Whangarei’. It was written by one of our local good news writers – Claire Chateau. I’m pleased it’s up there because it hasn’t been an easy process for Claire. She’s French and although she’s a gifted writer, what with English being her second language she’s been through a process of not only learning the strange and erratic subtleties of the English language, but also the equally strange written language of journalism.
It’s a funny old process, learning to write for different Editors – because we all want something different. While I want people to write in a positive, and upbeat tone, and I’m not so fussy about the grammar; others, particularly print media Editors, have to be fastidious about grammar as their work will be out there in the community for ever more. And that’s only the beginning, every Editor has a long list of ‘dos’ and ‘don’t's that they hand their writers – either figuratively or literally.
Claire sent me an article a few months ago and I sent it back with a few suggested changes. It turns out I wasn’t the only one suggesting changes. She was on the proverbial ‘steep learning curve’ and I’m proud to say that she stuck with it and sent through a marvelous article about an inspiring subject. If she carries on in this open minded, determined manner, she’ll experience a successful writing career – she could take her writing in any direction. It all comes down to choice. And because she stuck with it through the hard times, she now has more choice. Good on you Claire.
