365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#191 – Fund Raising at the Children’s A & P Show – Beaut
I’m sitting beside Anna the (viking-like mother of four) chopping carrots and apples as fast as I can. There’s a flurry of young children and hopeful looking parents in a cluster before me. Anna’s juicing like a pro and I’m leaping up in the air occasionally to hurl another load of apple cores over her into the inconveniently placed bin, basket-ball style.
Yes, it’s a playcentre fundraiser and we’re at the Takaka Children’s A & P Show. I’m impressed that children want to buy fresh juices, though admittedly, right behind me the table where you can sit and decorate your own muffin with icing and lollies is heaving.
Our face painting zone is another hot spot, the children are surrounding it from every direction, and the parents who have suddenly taken up face painting are deep in concentration as they draw upon their artistic sides in the name of charity. Later they will stand up stiffly and spend the afternoon resting.
It’s great being on the front line of customer sales again. It reminds me of my days as a shop girl in my youth. I was good at it – all that smiling and serving people. All that counting money and sending people on their merry way. The only thing about shop work here in New Zealand is it’s paid rather badly, or I’d have perhaps stuck with it.
Predictably, the spike in demand for carrot and apple juices was short lived and we’re left with time on our hands and nothing to do but gossip merrily. I have a happy moment as I sit there beneath my sun hat, on a camp chair beside my friend. All is well. The sun is shining, baby cows are being lead quietly past our stall and a Golden Retriever who has won a red ribbon is sitting patiently before me whilst being vigorously admired by roving people. Yes, it’s a Kiwi Children’s A & P Show, and it’s nice to be home.

I, too, had a wonderful time helping at the Playcentre stall. It is truly awesome that I have the opportunity to work with and get to know such great parents-multi-talented people, Clever people, FUNNY people. It is wonderful that it is possible to meet kindred spirits in some unexpected cooperative effort as joyful as our children’s education.
