365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog 221 – Girl’s Innocence Preserved in Police Station

Submitted by on December 2, 2010 – 12:00 pm

Today I found myself standing at the police station watching a nice police man demonstrate all the toys on his special vest – including the pepper spray and a flicky wacky stick thing.  He spoke in a very kind voice and took care to only talk about the less scary things that his police toys could do.  We got to feel how heavy his day to day vest was (quite heavy) and then we got to lift up his (eeek!) stab-proof vest (alarmingly heavy).  He kept the talk mellow and kindly. It was as if he knew that I was an innocent (sort of ), purposefully happy, naive sort of person who can only handle so much information.

Actually he was aiming his talk at my three year old and the other thirteen play centre friends in the room, plus the ten or so parents.  Us parents all flinched and gasped as he gave his very tame police man speech – including telling the children to wave at the police cars and to be good and wear their seat belts.  When he got his handcuffs out my son wasn’t overly keen on stepping up for the demo and I certainly wasn’t going to encourage him.  I’ve never been handcuffed myself, but the concept of being trapped by small metal rings doesn’t please me.

It was, however, quite exciting getting the kiddie-version tour of the police station.  We stopped every five minutes to take photos – of children on the floor beside the police man, with police hats on, in the police car, on the steps beside the police man etc  And I’ve got to admit I was impressed when he stopped the traffic for us to walk across the road at the end.  Ahhh, such authority and power!

I later did all sorts of exciting grown-up things in Happyzine mode and made great progress with Wild Energy (we’ve launched the comp. and are now promoting it) and my new ebook. Thanks to David Laing and his current cold-calling phase (it’s what you’ve got to do sometimes) I was inspired to make a few cold calls myself – to Meridian Energy and the Green Party – both of which resulted in enjoyable conversations.  After all the cold-emailing I’ve been doing to promote my ebook I’m ready to embrace cold-phone calling and even a spot of cold-skyping.
