New York here we come: Media Design School alumni to represent NZ in NYC

Submitted by on September 28, 2012 – 10:52 am

 For immediate relase

Auckland, 27 September 2012: Media Design School graduate Hayley O’Connor aka Hayley Heartbreak will travel to New York to see her illustration projected into Times Square as part of a promotional campaign for New Zealand.

Hayley is one of three winners of the Chorus NZ Student Digital Art Competition, which is part of a campaign to promote the benefits a fibre optic network can bring. In this case how digital art can be transported via fibre technology and shared with the world.

“The exhibition on Thursday 10 October will be a broadcast from NewYork City to a cinema in Auckland, which will be pretty awesome. I am extremely happy – I am still on cloud nine,” said Hayley, who also won $5000 in prize money.

Hayley’s entry “For The Young at Heart” gives the iconic Snow White icon some distinct Kiwi flair.

“When I lived in the UK I’d frequently see New Zealand being touted as ‘the youngest country in the world’ and I think that when you are young (or young at heart), the one thing that universally ties us together is fairy tales, particularly of the Disney variety. I wanted a very ‘Aotearoa’ take on the iconic pose of Snow White and her animals. I included nods to the Bird of The Year competition (piwakawaka, kereru, tui and saddleback), Pania of the Reef and New Zealand lamb which, while not native, is certainly iconic to countries outside of the Pacific – I drew the line at including Hobbits.”

Since graduating in 2010, Hayley has established a reputation for her dynamic illustration.

“I am thrilled to be representing Media Design School, who showed me that it is possible to learn illustrator and actually love it in the end.”
Hayley was selected from 131 “seriously talented” entries from across New Zealand by a panel of industry experts.
In addition to the three winners, a further 10 finalists will have their work screened in the exhibition and receive $1000 prize money. The finalists include Media Design School Graphic Design lecturer Tatiana Tavares.
Tatiana’s work formed part of her MA thesis in graphic design. It is an illustrated allegory designed for an adult readership. The story is based on her experiences as an immigrant to New Zealand from Brazil.
