One Billion Bicycles …the adventure – by Sarah Cowhey
One Billion Bicycles…the adventure.
In 2006, I met a bubbly and fun sized Melbourne girl with dreams of changing the world. And now
she’s doing just that, with a bag on her back and a camera in her hand. Unlike most travellers these
days, she isn’t trying to find herself. She is looking for a bicycle. Or more accurately, she is looking for
One Billion Bicycles…
We all know the feeling. You are getting ready for work … last drops of coffee sipped. You put on your
flouro vest, the flouro cover on your backpack, the flouro ties on your trousers. You switch on the front
light, then the back light. Then, the spoke lights. You put your helmet on. Before long you are lit up
like a Christmas tree, and lets all admit it – not a very flattering one. But this is what it has come to, to
be safe and visible on our roads. Or so we think.
But the One Billion Bicycles Project is trying to change that…
So far we have visited 39 cities in 24 countries, in 3 continents. We have talked to people about their bicycle culture (or the lack of!). We have seen the best and worst ways to implement bicycle infrastructure. We have debated hot topics such as the helmet law, segregated bicycle lanes and ride share schemes. And we haven’t even visited China yet.
I joined Bojun on this adventure almost 6 years to the day after meeting her and its been a wild ride! Harnessing the power of the internet, cloud storage and sending HDD’s through the mail, we have succeeded in bringing 5 of the 30 videos to those following us online. And now we just need some help
to get us on the home stretch. Please support the humble bicycle and what it can do for the world! Visit our blog (http://www.thebikeinmylife.com/category/the-bike-in-my-life-blog/) and watch our videos (http://vimeo.com/thebikeinmylife) and pass the message on!
