Sydney residents are being invited to “Show off” their repurposed furniture, favourite bike routes or delicious edible gardens in the City’s Good Hood social competition.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore invited Sydneysiders to share their favourite good and green things happening in neighbourhoods across the city, by pinning a picture to thegoodhood.com.au.

“It’s inspiring to see the sheer diversity and scale of green projects underway in backyards and balconies across the city,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Discovering the clever and creative environmental acts our neighbours are up to is a lot more fun than reading a manual.”

In the second year of the competition, prizes will be awarded every few months to encourage environmentally sustainable habits by inspiring entrants to do them again and again.

Creative types who include a re-purposed object in a DIY project, upload it and pin it with a description could win a workshop for themselves and two friends with stylist Megan Morton at The School, worth $1350.

Foodies who upload their favourite sustainable meal will be in the draw for a set-course dinner for eight by the Urban Food Market (in Australia), valued at $640.

This year posts can be filtered through categories such as ‘get creative’, ‘green thumb’ and ‘eco transport’.

The website also allows people to find local sustainable businesses, such as Yulli’s eatery on Crown Street and the eco-friendly Object Gallery.

Entrants can add their images to the map via instagram with the hashtag #thegoodhood.

Last time around, Joshua of Zetland transformed a light from a ply cut out of the city that he had found in the bin room of his apartment block – winning an armchair upholstered by hand printed Cloth fabric for the Reuse and Recycle Prize.

Gavin from Darlinghurst’s solar-lit balcony vegie patch won a dinner for 20 at Tablefor20 in the Made and Grown prize. Creative agency Holler’s well-used bike rack won $1,000 worth of Go Get car share.
