Remember the Weka?  I do!  I have fond childhood memories of this feisty flightless bird making their presence known at our bach in Para Para.  At some point they just seemed to dissapear.  The good news is the Weka is  making a comeback.  The buff ones have been released to sow their wild oats in Wanaka (Otago Daily Times).

A Marlborough winery is ignoring the news of the economy and expanding its business.  According to Mahi Wines owner and winemaker, Brian Bicknell – “There’s still a lot of opportunity out there” (The Marlborough Express).
 
Old cell phones are being put to good use.  T’hey’re being traded for funds that will go towards Starship Children’s Hospital  (newzealandherald.co.nz).

Beginning with a fresh take on environmentalism: Tubby the Laborador has recyled more than 20,000 plastic bottles over the past six years (optimistworld.com).
 
 
Earth Houris nearly upon us and six bands are playing in a free concert in Christchurch to support the power saving effort.  The Scouts, the world’s largest youth movement, with more than 28 million members in 160 countries are reported to be “mobilising their supporters for Earth Hour”.
 
Aotearoa/New Zealand could lead the rest of the world in becoming a centre of sustainable energy according to visiting ecological economist Professor Robert Costanza.
 
And now onto the mighty whale …there’s just something special about these animals … the  North Atlantic right whale population has more than trippled over the last century (nytimes.com).
 
Meanwhile on land, sales of solar panels grew over one hundred percent last year, with Spain alone growing 285 percent making it the largest producer of solar power (Green.ideal).

In some parts of the world people are revelling in a break from the sunshine – Bangladorians (nearly) danced in the rain after the weather turned wet and provided much needed respite from unusually hot conditions recently (thaiindian.com)
