365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#74 – Grant Knowles of Tribull Drums

Submitted by on June 28, 2010 – 6:16 pm

Today I had the pleasure of being interviewed for Fresh FM by the Golden Bay-famous Grant Knowles.  Grant is a local drum maker – he founded Tribull Drums – where he makes, repairs, and teaches people how to use – hand drums.  His instruments are made from natural wood and he says he likes people to personally come and choose their own hand-drum.  They’re big, beautiful drums, made from local wood and natural hides.  They’re quite substantially sized, not small dinky little things at all … like Grant, really.  If you ever visit the Bay and have a hankering to own your own hand-crafted hand-drum, drop by and meet Grant.  He’ll take the time to get to know you and help you find the perfect drum.  They last a life-time.

This big hearted man is also a musician, artist, events organiser, parent, gardener, sound technician and god knows what else, who contributes an amazing amount of energy to the Golden Bay community.  Tonight he’s off to a Board of Trustees farewell dinner (for his son’s school) especially for him, as he’s leaving after seven years of contribution.

He told me he’d have no problems filling ten minutes of recording and mamamia he was right!  Grant dutifully held the microphone for me while I raved about Happyzine and my social and political dreams for the site.  Before long, fifteen minutes of passionate talking had passed and Grant had more than enough material for his radio-show.

I was lucky enough to work with Grant for a year or so as a musician.  He was my drummer.  He was  such a calm, stable, solid man to be up on stage with, the kind of personality you really appreciate when you’re dealing with nerves or challenging audiences.  He held an amazing rhythm.

So there you have it, another Golden Bay personality.  All the people I cover in this blog know each other and occasionally collaborate in some way.  That’s the beautiful of living in a small community.
