365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation – Blog#75 – Eye Love You: An Experiment in Human Playfulness and Kindness

Submitted by on June 29, 2010 – 10:47 pm5 Comments

Today someone, who would prefer to remain anomomous, emailed me a link to a project he’s been working on called ‘Eye Love You’.  You have got to check this out.  The purpose of the Eye Love You project is to connect people with people, and people with places by placing eyes on and around our living-scape and creating faces where there once were none (see the lamp-post).  It’s really sweet, and really funny.  According to the site:

“the essence of this project is very simple:

•it’s kind to make people smile
•people and places come alive when we love them
•you are loved and you can love anyone/anything.”

I love those messages, it’s so true.  People and places really do come alive when we love them.  Have you ever noticed a child light up when you give them your full attention? Have you ever spent a little time in a space, tidying it and admiring it and begun to see its beauty? And love, most definitly, can go anywhere.

So where did it all start? Why, here of course!  In little old Aotearoa/New Zealand, just for the fun of it.  It has no commercial interests.  It exists because the founders (who, did I mention, would prefer to remain anonomous), like to see people smile. You can check out the amazing archive of images here.

Here’s the cool google map of all the places people have posted ‘Eye Love Yous’ (err… if that’s the lingo one uses) and created groovy and surprising faces ).  And here’s some more iinteresting info from the site -

EyeLove is everywhere for those who make time to see. You’re invited to see our world a little differently. Look for the hidden faces of love that surround us.

Love

Love has many faces. Light-hearted love is playful and brimming with kindness. It’s more expansive than a schmaltzy Hollywood romance. It’s that warm glow you get when you receive a good surprise. Or that bubbly feeling you get when you do something kind. It’s the love that connects Us.

You

You’re welcome to just peek at this site, or you can add some more faces.

It’s interesting that right now, the founders of this site want to remain anonomous.  I’m curious as to why someone who had dreampt up such a beautiful idea would want to hold back on stepping into the lime-light.  Revel in the naivity and simplicity of this project I say, dear founders, revel!

Don’t get me wrong, I do understand why we’re shy about our dreams, it’s because here in my culture, adults  are expected to pretend they aren’t joyful, loving beings who are profoundly delighted by life.  Ahhh, so silly.  Luckily some adults refuse to ‘grow up’.

This is simply a wonderful project, I think it will do very well.  My message to the people who initiated this project is: be proud, pat yourself on the back, and have a kiss and a cuddle too.  And finally: thankyou.  Now … where can I make some ’Eye Love You’ faces?

365 Days of Fun and Chillaxation (as I raise my gorgeous son and  grow my good news website to a subscription base of 100,000 people).  The Low Down on this Blog.

Check out yesterday’s blog.

Feedback from the founders of Eye Love You:

“As for the reason why we set this up this anonymously: it’s not because we’re shy! We’re happy being in the spotlight, but we wanted to put the project centre-stage. It also adds more mystery. Lots of people are popping these eyes up all around the globe but no-one knows who’s doing it. Anyone can take part and it’s great to know that people are playing along just for the love of it. Our hearts go bing and we burst out laughing every time we see another location mysteriously added to the project. That’s a much better reward than any credit for starting it.

We might go public later on, but for now we’re happy just playing along like everyone else.

You’re welcome to quote me on that!”
