Fruit Trees Popping Up On Auckland City Council Land Everywhere

Submitted by on December 14, 2010 – 1:38 pm 3 Comments

Mount Eden Village People* in partnership with Auckland City Council are undertaking a trial project planting fruit trees on council land in Auckland neighbourhoods.

Back in 2008 Judith Holtebrinck, from Mount Eden Village People, took the idea of planting fruit trees for local communities to the Eden/Albert Community Board. The Board accepted her proposal and provided funds to plant 131 fruit trees on Council land.

These trees were planted next to playgrounds, in parks and reserves and streets in the wider community of Mt Eden, Epsom and Mt Albert during June and July 2010.

Our goal is to bring fresh food into our city, to support families to save money on their grocery bill and to educate kids on where fruit comes from. This is a trial project, if successful, more fruit trees can be planted next year.

We need your help to bring fruit trees back into our neighbourhoods. If you live in Auckland and would like to have a fruit tree on your verge, in front of your house; or if you know of any Council land suitable for fruit trees, we would like to hear from you!

Please send us details of potential locations for neighbourhood fruit trees by signing up. All suggestions will be assessed for suitability before locations are chosen.

Thank you for your support
Judith Holtebrinck

yeah, good efforts and thanks for the mulching – shame that the council plants so many young trees and then fails to find money to maintain them so they can survive!! Good on you Judith for taking the matter in your own hands and sorry that I didn’t offer mine! E.
