2011 Golden Bay Ecofest Local Food Challenge Cooking Competition

Submitted by on July 25, 2011 – 3:29 pm

Claire Webster – Tasman District Council

What can we grow/harvest or catch in the Bay? What could you cook with it?

When – bring entries from 5-5:30 pm on Thursday 11 August
Where – the Wholemeal Café
What – 5 sections to enter –
· under 14 (at time of judging) – savoury
· under 14 (at time of judging) – sweet
· Adult – savoury
· Adult – sweet
· Adults – the Possum special! Main ingredient is possum meat. So get catching and creating. (Did you know – scientists reckon the about 70 million possums eat 20,000 tonnes (the same weight as 4000 elephants) of vegetation in New Zealand every night!!!)

What to do –

1 – Prepare your dish with 95% Golden Bay grown &/or processed food.
2 – Write down a full list of ingredients (including where they are sourced from).
3 – Write down the recipe. We may use recipes in a local cookbook in the future  – if you okay it.
(The Wholemeal Café may also trial winners’ recipes if you are willing).
4 – Entry is from 5 pm till 5.30 pm – you will be given a number to display with your entry.
For voting purposes PLEASE DO NOT SHOW YOUR NAME – write it on the back of both the ingredient list and recipe. You will get a number to put with your entry.

At about 5.45 pm our judges will start sampling. At 6.15 all competitors will also start sampling food. Each competitor can then vote for their favourite dish in each section.  Judges will choose 1st in each section and participants’ votes will decide 2nd and 3rd prizes. Each competitor will be given 5 tokens to vote with – one for each section.  After tasting and voting, votes will be counted, the food shared pot luck style and winners announced.  Family may support competitors but we ask you be thoughtful about not eating too much or voting what is really for the competitors to participate in. Parents supporting their children are encouraged to enter too – make it a family affair.

Criteria for judging –
* Appearance – general appeal – it looks good enough to eat!
* Taste, texture, smell – the eating experience
* Locally sourced –full ingredient list and recipe
* Creativity & originality

Prizes are

1st prize – $50 gift voucher for the Wholemeal Café  – (Adult savoury section winner receives $100 voucher!)
2nd prize – Ecofest gift pack including a book and canvas bag
3rd prize – $15 voucher for the Wholemeal  Café
There will be spot prizes too.

Please pass this on so as many as possible get to know.

Thanks very much – and don’t forget to enter.
