P3 Foundation, New Zealand’s youth movement against extreme poverty, has this week hired lawyer and charity director David Tong as Chief Executive Officer.

Mark Mulholland, the Chair of P3 Foundation said:

“It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of P3’s new CEO: David Tong.

“David is a co-founder of P3 and has made a massive contribution to the organisation since then. David’s knowledge and understanding of P3 is unmatched.

“In addition to his previous involvement with P3, David brings a wealth of experience from a range of roles in the NGO sector. Among his various roles, he is the International Campaign Coordinator for Fast for the Climate, the Node Coordinator for the New Zealand Climate Action Network, and a Board Member for Greenpeace New Zealand.

“David’s appointment comes after a competitive selection process which attracted a number of high calibre candidates.

“With the advent of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement, 2016 is a crucial year for sustainable development. In this context, David is uniquely placed to lead our movement to see the end extreme poverty.

“We are very excited about seeing P3 grow and develop under David leadership.”

P3 Foundation founder and inaugural Young New Zealander of the Year, Dr Divya Dhar said:

“I’m very excited about David’s appointment to lead P3 Foundation! Now, after five years, P3 is ready to step up to the next level – and, having known David for over a decade, I’m sure he’s the man to take it there.”

Incoming Chief Executive Officer David Tong said:

“I love what P3 Foundation has grown into over the last five years. Especially now, New Zealand needs a vibrant, diverse and exciting youth movement against extreme poverty – and that’s what we have in P3 Foundation. I am extremely excited and honoured to be selected by this role. For the last five years, I have been constantly amazed by the strength and passion of our movement. Now, it is my job to unlock that passion in our volunteers and supporters to help put poverty in the past – where it belongs.”

P3 Foundation is a nationwide youth-led development organisation that inspires and empowers young New Zealanders to help eradicate extreme poverty in Asia and the Pacific. P3 stands for “Putting Poverty in the Past”. It aims to secure the full realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals before 2030. Dr Divya Dhar, the 2010 Young New Zealander of the Year, founded P3 in December 2009. Since then, P3 has raised over $150,000 for our partners’ development projects in Burma, India, Indonesia, and Tonga – and mobilised over 5,000 young New Zealanders.
